Natural Hair Doesn't Look Good on Everybody

BEGIN RANT...

Huh? Really? If you are confused by the title, please join the club! How on earth can the hair God gave you, "not look good"? After hearing countless people tell me "You look nice with natural hair, but not me." or "Natural hair only looks right on certain people." or "You have a better grade of hair and that's why you can wear your hair in natural styles.", I just want to SCREAM!!! Come on people! The hair God blessed you with is GOOD ENOUGH! "Good hair" is healthy hair and has NOTHING to do with the texture or size of your curls. Whether you are a 2a or a 6Z, you hair can thrive with the right style and proper care. We really need to learn self-acceptance and realize that beauty comes in a variety and is not represented by one look or appeal.

More importantly, we need to learn how to do our own hair! If naturals knew how to take care of their hair and how to achieve a nice style, many of those comments would cease! I am motivated to teach women how to do it themselves. This is my project for the summer especially now that I have a new, Youtube compatible video cam, so look out!

In the meantime, if you are having trouble styling your hair? Check out the GAZILLION other Youtube videos and blogs that show actual tutorials on countless natural hair styles and product usage for natural hair.

Okay, rant over!

I'm back! Stay tuned!

*screaming on the top of my lungs inside my head while I'm at work haha* I can't stand that mess. I will admit that some ppl have really hard to manage hair, but with dedication the most nappy(cringing as I type) hair can look fly. I've heard that crap sooo many times and I really wish I knew y ppl think like this. ugh

They're called "excuses," and I've heard each and every one of them. As far as "hard to manage," hair is only hard to manage when you're trying to get it to do what it's not supposed to do naturally - i don't think anyone has hard-to-manage hair.

Yeah!!! Glad you're back! I totally agree with you. People do need to be re-introduced to their hair so they can get to know it, develop a deep relationship with it, and fall in love with it! I think the "it looks good on you but not on me" comment is really code for "I'm too scared to walk around with nappy hair" or "I've done this all my life and I am too stuck to change now" or something like that. I feel ya gurl!

Yes, I agree with this post and I'm glad you are back girl. I went natural and got scared as well (like Faithy Faith) I didn't think I knew how to style it because my twistout didn't work well when I should have just worn the afro that God gave me instead of running back to a perm. I hope to one day go back to natural. I am also expecting a daughter and I'm not sure if she will have a curly texture like her father or a kinkier texture like me, but I plan on keeping her natural and not letting her be brainwashed by her peers and I also want to perfect some cute styles that will hopefully inspire other young girls instead of cause them to pick on her.

Ladies, YES! Thank you for your responses. Natural hair is currently a movement but it really should be a lifestyle. Natural hair shouldn't be something we transition to, we should embrace it from the beginning. Self-acceptance is learned behavior. Lets each one teach one!!! Thanks for the comments!

I am so happy to read the "rants and screams" because this is the MOST RIDICULOUS statement ever concerning "natural/nappy hair!" I just can't believe some "ignorant" statements! This is the HAIR that our Creator whom I call The Lord-God gave us! If we were supposed to have STRAIGHT hair - and some of us do, then that is what we'd have and would "wear it" as it is! SO, WHY are we defined by bone-straight measures when that is NOT what we have???? I can't believe it. Again, I love your comments, so many and I'd just be redundant in typing but will say that there are so many wonderful, natural products to compliment our "natural" hair to first keep it "healthy and hydrated/moisturized" and then to make it look very nice! I chose to do locs and am very happy with them. Before than I wore a natural fro, sometimes curling it with conditioner and moisturizing gel - prior to "letting go permanently" of harsh chemicals I saw nothing but destruction, thinning, balding, and bad hair days! Now all of my daughters are natural as is my grand daughters - my daughter wants her daughter to know that natural is beautiful so she is setting an example for her to lover herself and feel beautiful in her OWN NATURAL HAIR! I am natural for life!!!
