My hair has grown quite a bit since the "second big chop" (pictured above) (my first one was in 2004) but the front of my hair is still very straight. There is a slight wave to it, but its pretty much straight. You can see it in the picture above. The front of my hair now stretches to my bottom lip and it is still STRAIGHT from the root and I have NOT straightened my hair since I big chopped almost 7 mos ago!
Also, I noticed, that my sister and my aunt also have the same issue. Many of us already have more than one texture on one head, so its no surprise that the front of my hair may be a different texture than the middle or the back, but STRAIGHT???? I didn't go natural to embrace my "straight" hair.
I can't stand it because it ruins my twist-outs and wet-n-gos, two of my fave hair styling options. I have to roll up the hair in the front to get it match the rest of my hair. People constantly ask me if I permed the front of my hair (what purpose does that serve?).
Perhaps, the years of perming my hair has caused it to be straight in the front, although, there is no evidence to support such a claim. Perhaps it is simply genetic since my sister and aunt both share the same identical "problem". My other sister and my mother both wear locs, so I cannot tell if their hair behaves the same.
What do you guys think? Do you have straight/loose wavy hair place sporadically throughout your kinky curly head? How does your multitude of textures affect your styling options?
I truly understand what you mean. I thought the same things after I BC. I thought that the front of my hair could have been scab hair from perming for year or heat damage from constantly flat ironing my hair left out of my sew-in while transitioning. 10+ months later and after several trims the front of my hair still hangs stupidly compared to the rest of my hair. It totally messes up my 2 strand twists because my ends in the front middle of my hair is too straight to stay in a twist and immediately unravels. To make matters worse one side of my bang area hangs more than the rest. You can see the pics http://bit.ly/m7igR & http://bit.ly/1Q8c53
ReplyDeletei have that problem...i thought i was the only one...but what im doing is just pulling that section back or pinning it up...its hard because its like a 3rd of the top....idk...
ReplyDeleteive been trying to find remedies to make it curl like the rest of my hair...i never new that was the pattern...its not straight its just loosed curl...and i look like i have a bob or something...thnnx
I've been natural a little over 1 year and 3 months and have never straightened my hair but sadly, I have the same problem.
ReplyDeleteWhen styling, I usually twist/braid smaller peices in the top section.
Doesn't do much good though and this part frizzes much more than the rest.
I have very loose waves at the front and tight kinky curls at the back!! I've always been natural. Its annoying sometimes because when I have my hair in twists the front always comes out!!!

the front of my hair is straight, too! i'm quite certain it's a result of heat damage. however, it's not uncommon to have a head with different textures of curls. i think the front of my hair is more susceptible to being straight because it's a different hair texture than the rest of my hair. the front portion of hair seems to react very differently to heat than the rest of my hair. it's sooooooo annoying!!
ReplyDeleteomg...yes, yes and yes! i've dealt with this problem for years! i've been relaxer free since 2001. however, since that time, i've been straightening it with heat. last august, i decided to go without direct heat. since that time, my hair, with the exception of the front, has reverted back to its natural state. the front, however, does not have the same curl pattern as the rest of my hair. at one point it was BONE straight. after almost an entire year, the front of my hair is a wavy/straight texture. even during the period of time while i was constantly straightening my hair, the front was always a different texture than the back. i'm sure the front has to be a different texture. maybe it has to do with the fact the front of the hair is more susceptible to combing, straightening, coloring, being affecting by weather conditions...i don't know...but it's really annoying!!!
ReplyDeleteThe dead center of my hair doesn't seem to take to any kind of curl. With any style, it falls dead in the center, and frizzy. I'll end up looking like a moth some days, so i tend to pull my hair up in a puff.
ReplyDeleteI've yet to figure out how to blend it.
Wow I really thought I was the only one with this problem. I've been natural for about 1 year and 7 months and have been stuck with a puff because I don't know what to do with that straight side that wont keep twists or the curls that naturally occur in the rest of my hair... (sigh)
ReplyDeleteI do have to agree with the hereditary hypothesis. the back of my grandmother's hair was like that but luckily for her it was the back and much easier to hide than mine which is almost the whole left side...
HELP!
I actually think that there maybe some truth to that statement. I am a newly transitioned natural girl. I did the bc in March/April of 08 and my hair is now fully natural. However there is a tiny patch of hair to the back of my head. I often wondered if I forgot to cut off that patch but as my hair grew I would check the roots and it was stright. So I cut off that tiny patch and it is still growing natural. So my first thought was that the chemical went down into my scalp...so I dunno...lol....love your blog btw! :)
ReplyDeletedifferent textures is so annoying. i'm 7 months into transition with about 4 inches of natural hair and am bummed to see that the front hardly curls at all, the middle does corkscrew curls and kinks and the back 1/3 forms loose curls like Tracee Ellis Ross. I blame my parents for the confusion, not heat damage.
ReplyDeleteThe front of my hair is more on the straight side, but the back has loose curls. i've been natural for all my life (less 2 months), so I've always just attributed that phenom to 'genetic mixup'... LOL!
ReplyDeleteI'm usually in rope twists or fine plaits, so it's no bother. I really should find something else to do with my hair though (locs seem a bit too permanent for my taste, but who knows).
Anyway, maybe browsing around here I'll be able to pick up some ideas. ;)
im currently transitioning (6 months) i plan on doing my chop this summer in july. Ive subscribed to your blog and have read some of your articles. they are an inspiration to continue with my journey. thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI have almost the same problem. My hair however is straight at the tips and fuzzy at the roots. For example, My hair is about 6 inches long (after the second BC) and 2inches of it is fuzzy. It's like once my hair reaches a certain length it straightens out. I can't stand it and am seriously considering getting a relaxer. I Used to have one and it really broke my hair off, but I don't know what else to do. :o(
ReplyDeleteI'm so relieved to see that I am not the only one! When attempting to do coils or two strands twist on the right side of my hair they turn out great, however, when I try the left side they turn out really..'fuzzy' and don't even last for 3 minutes. They start to frizz and unravel themselves. When i wear my hair in a fro, the left side is always 'straight' looking =/
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem, the front of my hair is 3b, the crown(upper back) is 4a, and the rest is 3c.
ReplyDeleteAs of yet it's not causing a problem as far as styling because I've decided, until I reach my goal length (WL), to wear a wig when I go out.
It can be inconvenient though for my product use because while certain product will moisturize my entire head, the crown area of my hair will be bone dry. I'm still trying to figure out what to do.
i have that problem even though my hair is much tighter than your's. my hair is like a 7b but the fron is significantly looser and more pron to stay straight compaired to other parts of my hair
ReplyDeletesame here - i assumed it was heat damage too!
ReplyDeletebeen about 1yr natural and still straightish at the front.
grrrr xx
I have the EXACT same problem. The back of my head, beautiful curls. the front: straight hanging pieces. i'm at my wit's end.
ReplyDeleteI've been natural for about 4 1/2 years and I have the same issue: straight/loosely wavy in the front, tight, frizzy/straight in the center, kinky in the mid-back, and loose/curly in at the very back and left/right sides. My mother tells me my hair has always been like this and I will never understand why, but it is SO frustrating because I can only wear 1-2 natural styles that don't look like a hot mess (i.e. pulled back in a puff or two-strands with longer fronts). I guess we just have to learn to love and deal with it. Sigh...
ReplyDeleteSame here. I don't think it has anything to do with heat styling, it just grows different on different parts of the head. My hair in the middle of the back of my head is super tight curls. The front and sides are wavy and almost straight. I don't use heat styling, so I don't know why it's that way, but it just is.
ReplyDeleteOmg, I thought I was the only person. I have 3 textures in my hair, the front is wavy & lays down easily, the middle kinky with no curls & stands staright up. While the back 2 inches are straight. -_- idk how to make the textures work. I need some help
ReplyDeleteOmg me too and I hate it! Makes it impossible to wear braid or twistbouts because they dont hold in the front portion of my hair. I was thinking about putting henna in the baack and amla in the front to try to get them at least closer to the same texture.....what do you guys think?
